The world’s largest producer of vanilla is Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Vanilla is sometimes called tropical orchid, as its growth is similar to the growth of vines. It is found on plantations and in forests. Vanilla pods are harvested while they are still green and then they need to be dried properly, which brings out a distinctive vanilla aroma and flavour. Scraped vanilla is used in Stork ice creams.
